Medical pendant is the necessary and basic equipment in hospital, mainly function is support fix for medical equipment, and support medical gas and power, it is widely used in operating room and ICU

From this we can see that medical pendant is not medical equipment, but it is widely used in medical industry, so we called it as basic equipment.

Besides, no matter how to design it, it has 2 mainly functions:

1st, fix medical equipment. Such as anesthesia medical pendant, we can fix the anesthesia machine on it, guaranteeing anesthesia machine will not move itself, and medical staff can move it by move hanging arm, move the anesthesia machine near to patient head. And some hospitals will equip multimedia, fix display screen in medical pendant, by adjusting medical pendant to fix display screen, convenient for minimally invasive surgery.

2^nd, support medical gas and power for medical equipment. Such as anesthesia medical pendant, generally anesthesia medical pendant need input medical gas (oxygen, air, nitrous oxide), output medical gas (anesthesia emission), strong electricity (220V alternating current) and weak electricity (RJ45). Before medical pendant produced, those will be installed in operating room wall, with medical pendant usage, those equipment has transferred to medical pendant, convenient for operation.

Finally, for ICU and operating room, more and more medical equipment are needed, so they need more medical pendant. Other departments also will equip medical pendant according to their need, such as rescue room, recovery room and outpatient and emergency

Operating light maintenance

1.      Daily inspection

-Bulb working condition.

Method: Put one paper in working area, if arcuate shape shadow appears, the bulb should be changed

-Disinfecting handle condition.

You can hear 2 click sound when installation

-Clean

Wash surface with weak alkaline solvents (soapy water), Chlorine solution (bad for metal) and alcohol lotion (bad for plastic and paint) are prohibited

2.      Month inspection

Mainly check back up battery.

Method: Cut off power, then check whether the battery is started

3.      For halogen operating light, the bulb life is about 1500h; for bulb socket, generally it should be changed one time in 1 year

4.      Annual inspection

Tight: Power line connector/ Screw/ Brush

Adjust: Rotation limit/Power/Joint brake

Inspection: Hanging arm verticality and balance/Joint screw condition/Joint brake condition/Rotation limit/ Cooling effect/Bulb and bulb socket condition

Detection: disinfecting handle installation/Illuminance/Spot diameter

Do you choose the right operating light?

Operating light is the most import light in operating room, affecting surgery result. Now let’s talk about the main points when you choose operating light.

Firstly, we should to know how it works generally.

During surgery preparation phase, nurse or surgeon will move the operating light to probably surgery position. Then turn on it, generally surgeon will stand under the light at the same time, adjusting light position until meeting surgeon’s requirement

When surgery started, generally the operating light position will not change. But when the surgery filed or incision depth changed, the light also should be changed, surgeon or nurse can adjust it by handle.

Finally, after long time surgery, nurse or surgeon move operating light out of surgery field, remove disinfecting handle and disinfect it.

From above we can see that the main operator is nurse and surgeon. Before and after surgery, nurse should move the operating light for long distance. And for surgeon, no matter surgeon doctor or assistant, they will stand under operating light for long time, have very close relationship with operating light.

So how to choose suitable operating light? I think we should consider into below 4 points:

1.      Safety

Safety will be the most import factor for medical equipment. This safety not only means product safety, but also means the safety for user.

We will not talk much more about product safety, because now the operating light standards are much perfect both at home and abroad, and some Chinese test standards are higher than Europe standards. Most factories’ standards’ also is high, so the product safety is very small problem.

But some problems often happen which are caused by incorrect installation because of the complex design, or caused by lack of training.

Such as 2 common problems: some halogen operating light will flash, turn off or brightness becomes darker, causing blurry surgery filed. Generally it is because you don’t change the halogen light bulb in time, or you don’t install connector correctly. Another problem is that the hanging arm can’t be fixed, it will drift during surgery, it mainly caused by incorrect installed hanging arm.

We can see that it will have great influence for surgeon when surgery filed blurry or spot drift during surgery, maybe it will be failed, causing unimaginable consequences. So we should always warn ourselves and others safety awareness in the daily work.

2.      Suitable lighting environment

Besides safety, another important point is suitable lighting environment. For one surgery, surgery will stare at the surgery filed 90% time, others also will see surgery filed most of their time. Suitable lighting environment can let medical staff “see clearly, look for a long time”

 ‘See clearly’ means the color is not distorted, organs can be distinguished, without shadow.

During surgery, it is a prerequisite for the color to remain constant for a long time. If the red color become other colors when lighting it, it will cause surgeon’s misjudgment; When incision is deep, organs and blood vessels will mixed, and the color is similar, it is hard to distinguish; At the same time, when incision is deep, because the medical instrument’s block, maybe shadow will be formed, blocking surgeon sight.

 “See clearly”, operating light can meet this requirement by keeping constant CRI, adjusting color temperature and high shadowless affect.

 “Look for a long time” means look comfortable and look for a long time. For surgeon, soft and not blinking spot can reduce surgeon’s visual fatigue; besides, surgeon stands under the operating light for a long time, if the temperature rise on surgery head is high, surgeon will feel uncomfortable, and it also will cause the surgery filed temperature rise, maybe body fluids loss, causing dangerous.

But lighting environment depends on light source, with the technology development, from halogen operating light, Xenon light, to the newest LED operating light, light source’s development also improve light environment.

3.      Operate convenient, flexible and accurate

Before or after surgery, operating light should be moved in/out surgery filed quickly; during surgery, it should be adjusted according to surgeon’s need, and it should constant position for a long time during surgery, no drift

Generally, operating light’s light head is bigger no matter weight or volume. So for operate convenient, flexible and accurate, it has very strict design requirement for light head and hanging arm. The light head should reduce the volume and weight as much as possible while satisfying the appropriate lighting environment, the shape design also needs to minimize the impact on the purified laminar flow; Hanging arm components should move convenience, flexible and accurate positioning in the premise of carrying light head safety, and taking less space.

4.      Others

Carbon fiber operating table VS normal operating table

1.      Carbon fiber operating table means the table board is carbon fiber, normal operating table board is acrylic board. Carbon fiber operating table X ray transmission can be reached 100%, much suitable for surgery which will use X ray.

2.      The best design for carbon fiber operating table is that it should have top slip function or the column is eccentric column, then it can be used with X ray machine, getting the best carbon fiber transmission effect. If the column is on the middle of the table, and the top board cannot move, X ray machine only can transmit half of the table, not convenient. So when you choose carbon fiber operating table, you should choose those tables that have top slip function or eccentric column.

3.      Generally speaking, operating table driving system has 2 kinds: electric motors and electric hydraulic. Electric hydraulic system control operating table by oil hydraulic pump and oil cylinder, much more stable, lower noise compared with electric motor system. Most international brand adopts electric hydraulic system. And carbon fiber operating table is high level operating table, so electric hydraulic system is much suitable for carbon fiber operating table. Shadowless light & normal light difference

Why the normal light cannot be done as shadowless light? What’s the difference between them?

Shadowless light can support enough brightness for operating room, surgeon need to precisely recognize different organ profile and color, then they need the light which are near to natural light, at least 10,000 Lux illuminance, shadowless light can offer 150,000 Lux illuminance with single dome, and its brightness can be stepless adjusted. For halogen shadowless light, the spare bulb will be light automatically within 0.2s when the main bulb failure; for LED shadowless light, one bulb failure will not affect its normal work.

Electric hydraulic operating table is one of the most advanced surgical instruments in surgical field. Generally, big hospital will choose electric hydraulic operating table.

2.     Electric motor operating table with competitive price. Electric motor operating table is much popular all over the world now, easy to operate and maintain, with reasonable price, and it has wide brand to choose, it is one of the most import medical devices

In the surgical instruments field, electric operating table accounts greater share, more brands can be chosen, from low configuration to high configuration, electric hydraulic operating table don’t have low level products. Anyway you should choose operating table according to your requirement.

How to choose operating light?

Light source: now there are 2 light source: LED and halogen. Halogen operating light characteristic is that its lifetime is short compared with LED operating light, should to change bulb, higher radiation (heat), more brands, lower price; LED characteristic is that its lifetime is long, lower radiation (heat), there are several LED bulb in one LED light head, one or two bulb failure will not affect normal usage, there are internal or Chinese brands, price will be much higher compared with halogen operating light.

Generally, operating light has 2 structures: single dome and double dome operating light. For double dome operating light, sometimes the 2 light heads size are the same, sometimes are not, one big and another small, light head diameters are different. Generally speaking, the bigger one will have much better shadowless condition. Light head have hole type operating light and overall reflection type operating light, because of the OR laminar flow requirement, overall reflection type operating light is much popular now.

From the installation, there are ceiling, mobile and wall mounted operating light.

Operating light main parameters are illuminance, color temp, CRI, diameter of spot, light depth, temp rise, etc. About the mechanical aspects there are rotation angle, light head vertical movement distance and light head balance; If considering energy conservation, it should refer to products power consumption. Operating light principle

The shadow is formed by light irradiation. Different place has different shadow on earth. Arctic Circle has big shadow, because the sun lights there in oblique angle; the equatorial zone has small shadow, because the sun lights there in perpendicular angle. Carefully observe the shadow of the light, you can find the middle of the shadow is particularly dark, slightly shallow around. Shadow in the middle of the dark part called the umbra, surrounded by gray part called penumbra. These phenomena are closely related to the linear propagation of light.

If put one cylindrical tube on the table, next to it lit a candle, the tube will cast a clear shadow. If you lit two candles next to it, there will be two shadows that do not overlap. Two shadow overlap part did not shoot, is all black, and this is umbra; next to the shadow where only one candle lighted, that is penumbra. If you light three or even four candles, the shadow part will gradually shrink, penumbra will appear a lot of levels. Objects under the light can generate the shadow which composed by umbra and penumbra, also is the principle.

The electric light is illuminated by a curved filament, not just one point. The light from one point is covered by objects, but other light from other points is not all blocked. Obviously, the larger the area of ​​the luminous object, the smaller the umbra. If we lit one circle candle around the above cylindrical tube, then the umbra completely disappeared, penumbra is also light to hard to see.
